I am not sure why but the issue seems to be that the source language is set to a specific language (in this case, "en") rather than "auto".

The issue is that their user language is same as the content language, so the script asks Google Translate to translate the page from English to English. To which Google Translate responds with "wtf". Perhaps we shouldn't display a button in that case?

Because the content language of that wiki is still English, even if you create a /zh subpage. The recommended way of translating wikis on Fandom is to create another wiki in that language and connect pages between wikis using interlanguage links.

KockaAdmiralac, I see. Thanks for the further clarification. If that is the case though, wouldn't allowing Google to auto-detect the language solve both "issues"? It seems that translating from the same language isn't an issue if auto-detect is used. Plus, using auto-detect would allow for translation of pages in languages other than the content language. I understand why other languages should be placed on separate wikis but what about cases where, for example, there may just be a quote in a different language? Is there some other issue that requires the fixed source language as its resolution?

Perhaps there isn't, but we can only tell through usage. I would imagine automatic detection could in theory detect English as the page language if most of the interface uses messages which aren't translated to the wiki's language. If you want to make that change, I would have no complaints.

Huh. I didn't think about that. I could see that being an issue for wikis using lesser-supported languages. I guess it would depend on how exactly Google determines the dominant language and how much user content there is on a page.
