  • Should this switch template be converted to LUA if that is to be more prominent and workable in the future?

On a side note, in a template what does a number in three brackets {{{1}}} do?

      Loading editor
    • It looks fine as it is.

As for your second question, that is the template's first arg. So if you have a template that's code is just {{{1}}} and you invoke it like {{Template|hi}} it will output hi. If you invoked it like {{Template}} it would return {{{1}}}. Make sense?

    • Excellent, are there areas Lua can be used in?

Is there a way to see the arg templates? They seem like links? Just like with this table example there are a lot of {{{ but how does it know what the '1' in {{{1}}} and the information within is supposed to do?

        Loading editor
    • Yes, it can be used for a lot of things.

You have to be able to read the template and understand it based on context.

    • Are there handy things to make for wikis that lua can be used for?

So for the switch template there are:

      {{#switch:{{{1}}}| {{#if:{{{2|}}}<br />| (p. {{{2}}})}}<br />{{#if:{{{n|}}}<br />| — {{{n|}}} }}<br />{{#if:{{{q|}}}<br />| — "{{{q}}}" }}

What do they do? Like is {{{1}}} what causes what is after the : in |1 = [[Owari no Seraph]]: [[The World of Blood Legacy|Chapter 1]] to change? Then also what would the 2, q and n achieve?

    • See Global Lua Modules for a list of helpful Lua templates.

Basically the value of 1 changes the way the template works (#switch) and then it tests some other things. It's kinda complicated, especially if the code isn't formatted.

    • Thanks, could look into template ones sometime.

On templates do you know if there is a way to adapt this so that the left headings appear above instead? On phones the left side takes up quite a lot of space on a page so rather than the Characters, Manga Chapters, OVA and Side Stories being on the left, could they be moved above in the same manner as Chapter Navigation?

        Loading editor
    • I guess but honestly it looks fine for me in mobile.

    • It looks lovely and works excellently across platforms of course, and yet with that design also used on different wikis, could try something different. Especially on mobile see how Manga Chapters is on the left and has white underneath it, and then the chapters are in the right section. Hope you may tell me how to add the sections on the left above as a heading so rather than a left and right one, it's a long title heading like Chapter Navigation above, and then loads of room to fit all the chapters and that. It would be an equally as cool look but one I am REALLY eager to create you see.

    • Alright but you'd probably be best off asking the user who made the template in the first place.

        Loading editor
    • Impractical. It would appear that user became under the impression that I was speaking on behalf of Fandom staff (I wasn't, though even if I were, good?) I was of course very thankful for the help, some brilliant stuff was made hence why I suggested helping them in turn and yet the unfounded suspicion led to a breakdown of relations and no further communication from the account.

Always pleasant bringing these things up, but only to show how unfortunately it is not best for me to ask, and at any rate don't think the design would want to be adapted.

That is where I hope we can pick up development once more, the template needs additional designers to at least have a go at adapting them and still think it could look a different though equally as excellent type of amazing if we place the sections on the left above instead.

    • Ok. Before we proceed further, may I ask as to whether you're asking for this change in order to make the navbox show up better in mobile?

        Loading editor
    • No, they all appear fine in mobile indeed other devices, what it comes down to is a space thing. Just think the white space underneath say Manga Chapters is better filled with actual chapters themselves rather than half the screen kind of blank, and the other half which could be perceived as being crammed in the right. A nice horizontal heading above with the information filling the area below just seems a much better use of space.

    • May you help me with this? Think if we treat it as any other case, simply modifying a template to adapt a look for a wiki. As I say, it would show up better in phones, and other displays since the information would be spread out more, would that be good?

        Loading editor
    • I'll try and work on it when I have time but the most efficient solution would probably be to just create a whole new version of Template:Navbox with the new design.

        Loading editor
    • Thank you, the only thing I could recommend is changing the {{{group}}} layout on the left to the long horizontal bar that {{{title}}} is in.
